Zest...

...soap! No...that's not what I want to talk about today. How about zest, the food ingredient that is prepared by scraping or cutting from the outer, colorful skin of various citrus fruits, like lemon, orange or lime? No...not that either!

I want to talk about our zest...you know what I am talking about, right? Our zest for anything in life! Meaning our liveliness, energy or animated spirit for what we do, who we are and everything in life. Being without zest means we have no passion...for anything.

When you sail thru life on autopilot how can you possibly be living your life with zest? You can't because all you're doing is just going thru the motions and not really living. I ought to know, because I lived my life like that for a long time. Then I finally woke up out of my stupor (well, actually I was forced out of it) and realized that a whole lot of years had gone by and I wasn't really living.

Now all that's changed and I am happy to report that my zest for life has returned. I am happier than I've been in years and things are finally starting to happen for me.

So, please learn a lesson from me, before you wake up one day and realize that your life has past you by and you forgot to live it with zest. Figure out what you really want and go after it with all the passion you can muster. Be happy for what you have and don't let high expectations be your downfall. Never take anything for granted. You are the maker of your own destiny; only you can make things happen. When you do all of this, you'll never be disappointed.

Live your life to the fullest and live it with Zest!

Fill your life with moments of zest!

Yoga

When I was younger, I was really buff. Then after years of throwing myself into my work, failed attempts at motherhood, and various other binge eating habits, I lost it all. Now in my never ending quest to get myself back in shape, I think want to return to something I used to do a long time ago. Yoga.

Yoga really has a way of getting yourself in tune with your body. I remember doing so many things before that I can even dream about now. I was really flexible and my joings didn't hurt one bit. Now, well, let's not even go there.

I think with the help of a few yoga sessions a week, I will at least regain some of my flexibility and maybe even lose a few pounds along the way. So if anyone would like to join me, I have put a video below for all of us beginners who need a way to feel good about themselves and their bodies. Yoga is probably one of the least strenuous ways to tone up the areas that need toning, and regain the flexibility that you once had. It also helps to center yourself and bring calm to a pretty hectic life.

I hope you will all join me as I travel along this journey. I don't know about you, but I am ready for a bit of calm in my life!

Wishing you moments of great yoga!

Winters in Wisconsin

When I was growing up, Winter in Wisconsin was brutal. I remember heavy blowing snow, and deep freezing temperatures. I lived out in the country, far from town and in order to get services you had to drive, so we always needed to be prepared.

It was a good thing that my dad was an electrician and owned his owned company. He had many contacts in the community, so if anything went wrong during those winters, all he had to do was call one of the guys or someone else in the trades and they would arrive to help.

I remember one winter when the "fur was flying", the power went out and my grandparents, who lived down the street from us, had to move in for a few days because of the below freezing temperatures, lack of power and snow packed roads. Thank goodness for fire places, generators and snowmobiles!

The worst winter I think was when the temperatures got so cold, 80 below wind chill factors, and my parents bundled us up to go to church. What were they thinking?!?! In fact, our pastor said the same thing, "What are you doing here?". My parents replied, "It's Sunday, we have to go to church." Not many people made it that day, but we certainly did. It is one of my fondest memories, and I get a good chuckle out of it every time I think of it.

Today, I live very far away from my childhood home. In fact, that home has long since been sold, and my parents moved to a condo in town. Easier for them to take care of and they can travel anytime they like without having someone watch the house.

As for me, I like living where it's sunny and a bit warmer. Northern California is the perfect place for me, well...except maybe Hawaii, but that's for another day. It's sunny and warm in the summer and only slightly cooler with rain in the winter. I can live with the rain, but no more snow and cold for me!

Wishing you moments of snowless and cold-free winters!

Un - two little letters, so much power

"un"...two little letters, a "u" and an "n". Who would have thought that this tiny word could be so....so.... powerful? Did you know that there are at least 3,876 words starting with this little word? How amazing is that?!!! Unfortunately, the use of "un" can be seen as negative more than positive.

So what does "un" mean? Well Dictionary.com has defined "un" as "a prefix meaning “not,” freely used as an English formative, giving negative or opposite force in adjectives and their derivative adverbs and nouns ( unfair; unfairly; unfairness; unfelt; unseen; unfitting; unformed; unheard-of; un-get-at-able ),  and less freely used in certain other nouns ( unrest; unemployment )."

But it means, "yeah" in Japanese and if you capitalize it, the it stands for United Nations. In Spanish it means "a".

So let's take a look at some powerful uses of "un":

  • unacceptable - I use this word all the time. In fact, my mom even commented on this not long ago. She actually used it when she was trying to get something fixed. When she told me about it, we actually had a fun moment between us. This is really rare and I can't tell you how good it made me feel.
  • unacknowledged - I can't tell you how many times this has happened to me. Nothing ticks me off more then when I go unacknowledged...for anything. Maybe this is why I don't socialize very much. Who wants to stand around and be unacknowledged for being present. I don't know about you, but I am tired of holding up the wall and being forgotten.
  • unaffordable - I hear this word all the time, especially when it comes to the housing market. In fact, I've used it often because I can't afford to buy a house. At this point, I'm not sure I want to own one. I have more freedom; do what I want anytime I want. I can up and leave at the drop of a hat and not have to worry about selling a house in a market where there are too many houses available and the values are low. I guess this is one thing for which I can be grateful.
  • uncanny - Strange, weird, ghostly...yes. Happens ALL the time.
  • unemployed - For those of you who are currently out of work, let me just say that I understand and feel your frustrations. But know this, sometimes we have to accept something less than what you want in order to get what you need.
  • unflappable - Marked by assurance and self-control...I wish. Something that I aspire to...someday.
  • unheard - No...I want to be heard, but sometimes it's difficult because I grew up with the motto "be seen and not heard". This affected me deeply...maybe it's why I tend to "hold up the wall" so much.
  • unloveable - How many times did I feel like this growing up? More than I can count actually. This is a topic for another day.
As you can see, there are so many words that "un" can be paired with...so I will live you with one more "un", this time a little more positive, and via song:

Yes, I can be unmistakable...

Wishing you "unmistakable" moments!

Rest

It seems like there is never enough hours in the day, always something to do...and when things get really crazy, the thing that I never get enough of is...rest.

I tend to have insomnia, especially when my mind won't shut off, so getting enough rest seems like a thing of the past for me. My doctor really wants me to get eight hours of sleep a night, but I told her I was lucky to get six. Some nights it's four hours and I have been known to go to work on as little as two hours.

My mom told me a long time ago that my body knows when it is tired, so it will sleep when it wants too. She also went on to say that even if I am just lying quietly in bed and even if I can't shut my mind off, I am still resting. Seems odd because I feel like I am having live dreams rather than sleep dreams.

I recently asked my husband why is it that men seem to sleep better than women. He always seems to fall asleep right away and stays asleep while I will toss and turn for hours before falling asleep for just a few, what seems like, minutes. His response...because it's that time of life. Meaning...menopause. Now I really had to stop and think about this because if I count back the years when I went into forced early menopause (long story and someday I will share it), that would be about the time I noticed that I wasn't really sleeping or getting as much rest as I wanted to get.

Putting aside the fact that when I was younger I worked a lot of hours, I still managed to get a consistent amount of hours of sleep every night. Now it just seems like hit or miss. So...tonight I am taking matters into my own hands and I took a couple of antihistamines and hope to fall asleep fairly quickly. They should also take care of my allergies for the night too.

Wishing you moments of needed rest!

Peace

You've been elusive most of my life,
while I've dealt with the pain cutting like a knife.

I thought I was doing what was right,
working hard every day towards the prize in sight.

Others always came first day in and day out,
but reality set it and I was left in doubt.

When I finally figured out what I had lost,
half my life was over with no replacement cost.

At first I was angry, sad and blue,
but decided to kit butt and said I was through.

Now my life is back and it's all mine,
and the peace I've wanted is like a sweet wine.

It's all about having the right attitude,
and giving thanks to Him in gratitude.

Now I'm more happy and feeling less stress,
The world is mine with peace as my success.

 Wishing you moments of peace,

Ocean

Ocean waters...so vast and deep,
I stand at your edge and quietly weep.

So tired I kneel and ask for peace,
whispers from the deep help my pain to cease.

Waves so gentle, calming and true,
it must be your colors of green and blue.

Mesmerized am I by your tranquility,
oh how you give me needed stability.

With each inhale I begin to feel,
your healing powers...almost surreal.

My mind's eye holds the key,
to the beauty and wonder beneath the sea.

I may not swim, yet I am still drawn to you,
and as I exhale, I feel my soul renew.

Wishing you moments of peace and tranquility,

BFF #183 Chocolate

I love chocolate! Who doesn't, right? If I could eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner, I would. Oh wait, I have!

Did I just admit that? I probably going to be in trouble with the husband for saying that, but I don't care.

I really can't explain why I love it so much. Is it the smooth, creamy chocolately goodness? Yes! I am a milk chocolate lover! Now I know it's the dark chocolate that is suppose to be better for you, but it's that milk chocolate that gives me that "ahhhh" feeling.

I have had some really good chocolate in the form of chocolate chip cookies, brownies, cake and pudding. In fact, I think I actually went out to dinner once with some dear friends and the dessert was soooo good, I swear to you it was better than the best orgasm I ever had! I kid you not! So when someone says that a particular type of chocolate can be better than sex...don't question them. Run! Run to the nearest store and GET THAT CHOCOLATE! You won't be disappointed!

Now, for your viewing pleasure, I found this old classic stand up routine from one of my favorite comedians, Bill Cosby. I hope you enjoy it...

Wishing you moments of chocolate ecstasy!

BFF #184 I Quit

Sometimes you just have to quit and walk away from situations that you can't deal with anymore. I've been in one and it was painful. I wrote about previously so I don't need to go into all the details here. I don't like to think of myself as a quitter, but sometimes, you just got to do what you have to do. Otherwise, you end up as a shell of your former self.

I was headed down that road, and I didn't like where it was going. I must have the word "pushover" written on my head, because I feel like everyone knows that they can walk all over me and I won't do anything about it. Not anymore.

Because I quit...

...being your fall guy.
...being the one to clean up your messes.
...being the one who gets knock over just so that you can get to the top.
...being the one to do all the work and see you take the credit.
...living your dream, it's time for my own dreams to come true.

I'm proud to be a quitter, as now I can be a winner...in anything that I want.

Here's a video clip from a movie that I watch from time to time whenever I need some inspiration...it has a great "I Quit" moment. You can skip ahead to the six minute mark and view from there, or watch the whole thing.

Wishing you moments of realizing it's okay to quit.

Karma

Credit: BVDC/www.photoxpress.com
"Karma is a law in Hinduism which maintains that every act done, no matter how insignificant, will eventually return to the doer with equal impact. Good will be returned with good; evil with evil. Since Hindus believe in reincarnation, karma knows no simple birth/death boundaries. If good or evil befall you, it is because of something you did in this or a previous lifetime." - from the Skeptic's Dictionary.

I prefer to think of it as "What goes around, comes around." Meaning, if you do good things, than good things will happen to you. The flip side...if you're mean, than don't expect anything nice to fall your way, and if you think you're immune to it, then think again. It might not happen today, tomorrow, next week or next month; bad Karma always has a way of coming back and biting you in the a$$. Good Karma...well...good Karma are the sweet moments of life that show up when you least expect them!

Saw Gloria in concert...she's amazing!

Wishing you moments of good Karma!

Juggling

Do you ever feel like you have become the master juggler?

How many things can you possibly keep up in the air before something falls and breaks? And when something does drop (splat), well... it feels like it is the end of the world. DRAT!

Work, home, school, kids, husband, groceries, laundry, meal preparation, relatives, friends, etc., etc., etc. Who has time for a personal life much less a moment to catch your breath?

I've had to learn the hard way that I can't do it all. My husband tells me this all the time. His favorite expression is "Take Off The Cape!" He's right and now that I've done that, I actually feel a little bit better. Now when I actually drop something it isn't as painful as it used to be. In fact, I can laugh about it. Let's be honest here, there is only so much a person can do. If I could juggle like this guy below, I might be more inclined to put the cape back on!

My wish for all of you is to take a breath and stop juggling...just for a minute, OK? It really is nice when you can take a moment just for yourself and breath...

Wishing you moments of non-juggling time!

I've Got You Under My Skin...

...then, it was Frank Sinatra. Can't say enough good things about a good ol' Frank Sinatra song. I'm too much of a music connoisseur to not love these great songs of yesteryear. Let's take a look the original (note: this is just the song only, not the video of him singing on tv, as this was a better version of the song):

...today, newer versions of this song have cropped up; Diana Krall, Bono, Michael Buble, and even the hardcore band Seether has a rendition. But, I think my favorite remake is this one by Katharine McPhee (featuring my favorite trumpet player, Chris Botti!!). Let's take a listen:

Now I've really got this song under my skin...aaahhhhh...

Wishing you moments of great music!

Health

With everything that has been going on in my life for the last several years, I have to admit that I really let myself go. And, it's embarrassing.

I used to be in great shape. I was a dancer in high school and college. I lifted weights. I was buff. Then life took over and I lost sight of myself and what was really important. While I have had a litany of stupid "why does this have to happen to me" health issues, my problems are not that insurmountable. I just need to be diligent in the way I handle things.

But I am back now!

Over the last several months, I have been doing some testing on food intake, water intake and other liquid intake. I can definitely feel a difference in my body when I eat certain things and when I drink certain things.

The biggest difference I have experienced is the difference way my body feels when I drink soda and when I don't drink soda. As much as I love all types of soda, the bottom line is that it doesn't love me anymore. When I drink it, my body feels lethargic and in all honesty, is in pain. When I say pain, I am talking about joint pain in my hands, feet & ankles, knees etc. I have made a concerted effort to drink more water and I am feeling better...slowly with the help of some joint medication that I have to start taking again. I stopped taking the medication because I got lazy and look where it got me...nowhere. I've learned a valuable lesson here. No more soda and lots more water.

As far as food intake, I have to admit that I tend to be the "Carb Queen" in my house. With that being said, I believe that has been a real problem for me. I have to limit my carbohydrate intake and increase my protein my leaps and bounds. I'm working on it. It's very hard to switch the mindset, especially with the "Chocolate Princess" is whispering in Queen's ear!

So why the big change? Well, I am tired of several issues that have been plaguing me for the last year. And now I am ready to tackle them head on. That and the fact I am going to see my doctor in a couple of months. I promised her that I would make some real changes and now I need to do that.

So, I'll keep you posted on my journey to a healthier me. Hopefully it won't be too painful!

Wishing you moments of great health!

Garden

After my previous post for the A-Z Challenge, I though I would write about something that actually gives me a little joy in life - my garden.

When it comes to my garden, I don't green thumb. In fact, I have been known to kill a plant or two due to either over or under watering. However, it just gives me the opportunity to plant something else and try to make it grow. From flowers to plants to vegetables, every time I went to the nursery I marveled at the vast selections and the endless possibilities.

Living in northern California, I have an opportunity for a longer growing season. Last year, I had tomatoes all the way until December! This was highly unusual because the weather patterns changed and allowed for a warmer than normal fall and early part of winter. My tomatoes were little troupers...they grew to over 14 feet tall and I helped make that happen! I did it...I helped make those plants grow and produce that delicious fruit.

So what have I learned...well...I think the biggest thing I have learned that while gardening can be dirty, messy, and backbreaking, its also relaxing, rewarding and cathartic for this "lonely" soul. So the next time you're a little sad, go outside and plant a garden.

Wishing you moments of quiet gardening,
