Challenges and Changes

I am getting towards the end of meeting a challenge. It was a simple one really. Just post one thing a day on my blog for the Ultimate Blog Challenge (UBC). By doing so, I posted the link on the UBC Facebook Page, and then read the two posts immediately above mine.

It was a great way to get me back into writing and give others the opportunity to read some of my work. Although I had hoped to garner an increase in readership, I think the net result was zero. So while I have new followers, I lost some older ones. I had initially hoped to increase my readership, but I really think my ultimate goal was to actually write something every single day. And so for that reason, the UBC did its job; at least for me.

This has been a rewarding experience as it has helped to get my creative juices flowing. I've redesigned this website. The colors are similar but the page is even more classic. For the most part, I like classic and simple designs, so this new setup works for me. I liked the old design too, but the host where I got the designs is closing up shop and going away, which means my design goes away as well. I've also redesigned my recipes website, made it a bit more fun, and given it a new name! Look for In The Kitchen with Today's Working Woman. I'll be transferring all my recipes from my main site to the new one soon!

And, I have something new coming later this year. I'll release it during the fourth quarter, just in time for all of the end of the year fun!

Wishing you moments to meet challenges and bring about new changes!

Saturday Shopping and Random Observations

Have I ever mentioned how much I have come to dislike shopping? It has become a real chore for me that I would prefer to not do. In fact, on some occasions, I have bowed out and let my better half do it. Since he is the primary cook in the family, I see no point in following him on his jaunt through the grocery store.

It would be so much easier if it was just a simple up and down the aisles, but more often than not, it is a random course from one side to the other. When my back is acting up, or any other number of joint issues are giving me issues, I simply cannot walk. So I grab my own cart, get what I need, pay for it and then go out to the car only to realize he has the keys. Aaargh! This irritates me more than you could possible know. He always forgets to give me back my keys. Then I have to find someplace to sit down and wait. I have been known to walk around the store looking for him, but most of the time, I refuse to do so. Today my back is tweaking so I couldn't walk around looking for him.

Good thing I didn't have to wait for long.

So while we were out and about, we noticed a few things:
  • Most people's electrical systems don't work. How do we know this? Well they weave in and out of lanes without any indicators. Car designers should just remove the directional lights because no one uses them anymore. We spend so much time looking for speeders and stopping people for using their cellphones while driving. Instead, we should be fining people for not using their turn signals. Either that or have mandatory repair tickets to really find out if those electrical systems work or not.
  • The best time to go to Costco is when the County Fair is open. I don't think I've ever been in and out of that place so quickly.
  • The local Denny's Restaurant closed. Can you believe it? A Denny's right across the street from a retirement community. If a Denny's can't survive, then what's this world coming to? I guess everyone would rather have a Starbuck's than an American Institution.
  • Hostess is back with their Cupcakes and Twinkies. Their competition is heating up. Little Debbie's is now marketing and selling two-pack versions of cupcakes, twinkies and ho-hos. Unfortunately, the packaging is more expensive then buying their normal box size. Aaahhh...the world of convenience. It's a shame that convenience outweighs value because these small packages are actually more expensive. As my guy says, "Math! Math people!"
Wishing you moments to enjoy your weekends!

Projects and Design

I am currently working on a new exciting project in addition to some design work. While it is a lot of fun, it is very time consuming. I am learning editing, HTML coding and how to do esthetically pleasing layouts. Fun, Fun, FUN!

Can't wait to share it all with you, but in the meantime, below is a memory that puts a smile on my face every time I look at it!

Quiet Early Mornings and Routines

I like getting up early in the morning. It's so quiet and peaceful. No one to bother me and no distractions...at least during the work week. Except for Tuesday, when the hubs works from home, I have this time all to myself. He gets up early every other day of the week to go to work. Kind of a bummer for him since it's about 5:15am when he does get up and has to drive an hour to get to work. I get up right after he is finished in the bathroom which is typically around 5:30am.

These morning hours are mine to treasure. I have a routine that I follow pretty religiously. I generally turn on the TV to catch the weather for the day and then shut it off immediately afterwards because I don't want to watch the news and have it ruin my day. I put in a movie that I love and then I'll jump online to catch up on emails, and then perhaps check out Facebook for a few minutes. Afterwards I'll start working on my next writing project. About 6:00am I'll take a quick shower and then it's back to the computer to finish up whatever I've been writing on. I can usually pound out one thing before it's time for me to get ready for work.

I find that I am pretty productive when I stick to this routine. I feel really good when I can accomplish as much as I do. Since I don't have any other responsibilities besides myself and my husband, I know that I am making progress in this great big world we live in. Plus it leaves some of the evening time to spend with the person that I share this house with :-).

Wishing you moments of to enjoy those quiet early mornings!

One Step at a Time

I made great progress yesterday trying to get my life back in order. It's amazing what a few hours of "me time" will get you. I would have preferred a bit more, but you can't always get what you want. At least now, I don't feel nearly as overwhelmed as before.

I was able to figure out what I still have on my plate; projects that are not done, those that are finished and even some that I would like to do but haven't launched yet. There is always so much to do, isn't there? Seems to be the story of my life. But if I didn't have anything to do, then I would be bored out of my mind.

Purging is a very cathartic thing. I have about 3 big bags of garbage to take out to the dumpster. Not that I am a slob or anything, I just have a lot of stuff that on occasion gets out of control. Even though I made a big dent in it, there is more to get rid of; at least now I don't feel like it's putting a choke hold on me. Some of you must feel the same way from time to time I bet.

Frankly, it's our stuff that gets us into trouble sometimes. So much of it and for what? Do we really need it all? In some respects, probably; but for most of us, I don't think so. Even now as I sit here and write this, I am looking at what is left over and imagining it all gone. If only I had the time to finish those projects!

Just one step at a time Susan. One step at a time.

Wishing you moments get your life under control!

Worry Wart

I don't know about you, but I worry. I worry about everything. Sometimes so much so that it keeps me up at night. Sometimes I worry so much that it makes me sick...like today.

I worried all weekend about various and sundry things. I can't help myself, it's a part of who I am. Perhaps it's the way I was raised, but I worry...sometimes about the most inconsequential things.

So what am I worrying about lately:
  • My parents. They are growing older and with Dad's recent bypass surgery, it's at the forefront of my mind. It's a very real worry and I need to get home and see them soon.
  • Whether or not I will have a job; more specifically, whether or not I will get fired. I know I won't, but sometimes we all do things that may or may not be right, and in this day and age, no job is permanent. They call it "at-will". I know that I have been well-trained, but what if it's not good enough? What if there is some little thing that I did that turns out to be a big thing? It scares me so I worry.
  • My husband recently told me he has a new position at his work. He didn't tell me right away, thinking I would just figure it out on my own. Now that I know, I wonder all the whys and what fores. He really doesn't have anyone he reports to (not sure how this works), but like myself, no job is permanent and so I worry for him. I worry that this project he is working on won't be well received and he will have to look for another job. In this market, especially for him, it won't be easy.
  • I worry about having enough money to pay the bills. Don't we all? Things always work out but I don't want to get caught without something to fall back on.
  • Our condo and whether or not the owners will raise the rent. Things are slowly getting better in terms of the economy, so will they decide they want more money for this place? Will they raise it to the point that we will have to move?
Are these all needless worries? Am I thinking too much about things that should be left forgotten. Some will probably say yes, other still no. For me, these are all very serious and real issues that need to be address. There are more things I worry about, but for now I am tired and need to wrap it up. Perhaps I will get some sleep tonight because I've not had much sleep these last several weeks. Tomorrow is another day...another day to worry about something else. I am such a worry wart! I wish I could stop. I need to start thinking about other, more fun things that way I won't worry about other things that keep me up at night.

Wishing you moments of to not worry needlessly,

Growing Old

We all grow old, but do we ever stop to think about it. Going about our busy life, day in and out, that we hardly have time to go to the bathroom, let alone think about our own mortality. I guess my dad's near heart attack and subsequent quadruple bypass surgery has me thinking about this more than I should.

All of this has starting me thinking about my own life...again. Over the years, I've often wonder what it would have been like to find my birth parents. Truth is, I've been thinking about it more and more. Is it because I have always felt different or because I am looking at a future of losing my adoptive parents and being alone?

The older I get, the more it scares me to think that I will someday be alone. I'm surrounded by people all day long, but still go home to a relatively quiet house. No children to care for; just a husband who is pretty much self-sufficient. He loves me, but he doesn't need much help. He's older than I...but I love him. He's my family.

I have a brother, but miles separate us. Two years older, with a wife and extended family, he's busy with his own life. We talk...maybe twice a year. He's been shaken to the core though with dad's near death. Yes, it was a near death. My mom shared that bit of news with me a few days ago. I'm still reeling from it. But Jeff has been there every day, being with my dad and mom. I wish I was there but they've asked me not to...at least I've spoken with mom every day since she told me what happened. Jeff though...he's been there 24/7.

My friends have been helping me through this time, as well as my husband. I guess I've been living a busy life too, letting time slip by without my thought. Whoever coined the phrase "Ignorance is bliss" really should have come up with a better wake up call.

Wishing you moments of to remember not to let life slip by,

TWW's Book Review: Wedlocked: A Novel by Bonnie Trachtenberg

There is nothing I like better than seeing a jerk get what he deserves and that is exactly what happens to Craig. What a bumbling idiot!

On the flipside, I love to see that Rebecca actually decided to pursue her heart's desire. Bummer that she spent so long trying to make it happen. Typical that her family gave her a hard time about it, but not unexpected.

Wedlocked: A Novel by Bonnie Trachtenberg had some humorous moments in a ridiculously long book. I think it could have been paired back from the 272 pages, and still deliver the same story. I found it interesting that the Kindle version of this book had a smaller font size than most of the Kindle books that I have read. I think if it had been the same as other the others, it would have been over 500 pages, which is really way too long.

The author wrote some believable characters and I could actually see myself as Rebecca. Frankly, I would have kicked Craig to the curb long before walking down the aisle, despite the insistence from my family. However, it was nice to see Rebecca become a stronger woman and come to the realization on her own. While she has to go through a lot to get to the good at the end, (don't we all?), she comes out the other side a better person for it and met some really great people along the way. Rating:

TWW's Book Review: Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble by H.P. Mallory

Since I recently decided I was interested in the paranormal (romance that is!) genre, I found some interesting authors that have captured my attention. With this in mind, I decided to dive into a few other authors to see if I could take this interest a little further.

Ghosts, vampires, werewolves, witches and warlocks. Ummm...not sure if this one was really my cup of tea. I don't mind the witches part, but I can't really get into the other stuff. I think it's because of the force feeding of the Twilight Series via movies. (Note: I am probably the only one in the country who has not read these books nor seen the movies. Not that I don't want to...but I am not sure I am interested.)

The main character Jolie, seemed a bit, well, she was see-through and trite. The two male characters Rand and Trent, well who didn't see those two coming? Almost predictable. I spent the first half of the book wondering why I was even reading it. However, I wanted to give it a chance to see where it was going to go. Unfortunately, it didn't go anywhere for me. I was really disappointed since I had heard great things about the author H.P. Mallory.

Other problems:

1. Sexual tension between the characters: it was awkward and at best, high schoolish.
2. The antagonist, Bella was too extreme vs. Jolie who was insipid in so many ways.
3. Jolie's mom, barely a character, was made to seem stupid and oblivious to who Jolie really was and Christa, well she seemed shallow and vapid. Perhaps that's why she fit so well with Jolie.

Overall, Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble by H.P. Mallory is a huge disappointment (except for the cover which looked pretty cool.) Don't even want to read the rest of the series. Rating:

Saturday Observations

I had a whole other post started for today, but decided to postpone it because there are just a few other things that have been on my mind for some time. Let's dive right in and talk about a few things:

1. When did it become acceptable to go to the store wearing your pajamas? I realize that today's PJ pants are kind of cute and all, but back when I was younger and shopped with my mom, we got dressed and were neat and clean when we left the house. Nowadays, the younger generation looks like they just rolled out of bed, put some flip flops on and covered up with zip up sweat shirt. How about washing your face and putting a brush through your hair to look presentable? Appearance does matter!

2. When they told us to "Share the Road" with bicycles, I don't think they meant for them to take over the entire space. I respect their right to travel down the same roads, but I wish they would respect my right to do the same. Making illegal u-turns in front of me and crossing back and forth across two lanes is not being respectful.

3. Have you noticed how when you're walking down the aisle that some people are completely oblivious to the world around them, and will block the entire aisle so you can't get thru? When you say, "Excuse me," they give you a dirty look. Well I did say excuse me. I just want to get through and get my shopping done. This not only holds true for aisles but for checkout stands as well. Note: Never go to the store after work or on a busy Saturday afternoon, especially in a destination getaway for the weekend kind of town. Most people have one-track minds and being polite to the locals isn't a part of that. Hint: Don't block the aisles. Don't look down upon me because I didn't wash my hair and have it pulled up in a ponytail (you don't look any better in your flip flops and bathing suit covered up by an unstylish t-shirt and holding a case of beer. And please, do not cut in front of me in the checkout or steal my bagger away because you just have to have something right this very second. That is completely rude!

This is just a short list for today, but I'm sure I will come up with more.

Wishing you moments to observe the world around you.

Long Weeks and Great Husbands

After a very long week emotionally, I am extremely happy that today is Friday. My work week doesn't end until 5pm, but at least in my mind, the week is over.

I really didn't accomplish anything on the personal front. Once again, I am so far behind with dishes in the sink, a house to clean, book reviews to post, articles to write and laundry to do. I have basically two days to get it all done. Not looking forward to my weekend as I won't even get a chance to catch my breath. But I am not holding my head down because there are signs of hope.

My husband went to the grocery store yesterday, and bought groceries - very nice! Once less thing to do this weekend. My husband bought me a new cellphone last weekend - even better; and I found my power cord to charge it; I had temporarily misplaced it, had a subsequent meltdown because I lost it. However, my techie husband told me that my Kindle charger would work and I was able to charge my new phone without a problem.

So you see...the hubs has really stepped up this week and provided some support when I needed it the most. He hasn't even minded as I watch Christmas in July holiday movies every night for the last couple of weeks. He's a great guy and I am so appreciative beyond words. Just love him to pieces!

Wishing you moments of reflection,

Never Give Up

Do you ever feel like you just want to give up. You know the feeling. You work hard and nothing goes right:
  • It's starts in the morning when you put a hole through your stockings and it's the last pair you own.
  • You spill that $5 cup of coffee all over your brand new white blouse.
  • You break your heal on those expensive pair of shoes that took you three months to save for.
  • The car needs gas and you're already late to work.
  • Your boss asks you to do more work and when you try to accomplish all these new tasks, plus your regular work, it's not good enough. You're not working fast enough, smart enough, organized enough and generally feel like a bit fat failure.
  • You've had a distressing phone call you were prepared for that sends you reeling.
  • You go out to your car after work and find a flat tire.
  • You finally get home only to find someone in your parking spot.
  • Your internet connection is out and you have a bunch of work to finish and now you can't.
Does any of this sound familiar? If it does, you're not alone. I know how you feel. I've been there and to some extent am still there. Life is not perfect. But if there is one thing I learned, it's:

"If you really believe in what you're doing, work hard, take nothing personally and if something blocks one route, find another. Never give up." ~ Laurie Notaro

Then I put on my most comfortable PJs, pop in one of my "happy" movies into the DVD player, eat a big bowl of popcorn and forget all about the crappy day I just had.

Wishing you moments to remind yourself to never give up!

DVD Players Rock - No Commercials!

Last night while I was trying to watch a comforting "girl" holiday movie on one of my favorite cable channels, I was bombarded with commercials from the drug companies. All I can say is "Enough Already!" I am not interested in pills that reduce cholesterol, lessen the symptoms of Crohn's Disease, and stop my overactive bladder (if I had one.) Not to mention the fact that if I didn't think I had any one of these illnesses, by the end of the commercial, I would believe I had!

While I know that these problems are important to be aware of, it's not necessary to throw it in my face every seven minutes. When I was first married, it was bad enough I had to watch tampon, douche, cramp relief and the occasional constipation commercials while my husband was sitting next to me. Now, I have to watch arthritis, erectile malfunction, depression and COPD television ads with some occasional heartburn relief thrown in for good measure. It wouldn't be so bad if they just ran them once, but they run them over and Over and OVER again.

Whatever ever happened to the Maytag Repairman, Mr. Whipple, and Madge the Manicurist for Palmolive Dish Soap? And what about the food commercials for Macaroni and Cheese, Boboli Pizza Crust and Ruffles Potato Chips? I long for the day for when we could see the Jolly Green Giant, the Hidden Valley Ranch, and the Budweiser Clydesdale Horses. Oh and don't forget the ads for Norelco Shaver at Christmas. Life was so simple then...sigh.

Now I live for commercials with Beyonce touting the wonders of Pepsi, the Christmas Coca-Cola Bear and the Tostino's Pizza Rolls. I find relief in the Xfinity/Comcast, Direct TV and AT&T U-verse ads. I can even tolerate watching the dating website commercials for ChristianMingle.com, eHarmony.com and OurTime.com.

I understand the networks make money by selling advertising, but do they really have to sell that much television airtime to the pharmaceutical companies. Let's not even talk about the side effects they mention. I am done with all the drug ads. Please...I am begging you...ENOUGH ALREADY!

I completely understand why my husband channel surfs during the commercials, and I know why I watch movies on DVD all the time. It's so I don't have to watch all these ads again and again. DVD Players Rock - No Commercials!

Wishing you moments to not watch commercials!

What Brings Me Joy

In times of stress, I need to remind myself of the things that bring me the greatest joy and work to get those things back into my life. So let me make a list:

1. God - yes, he should always be at the top of the list. While my faith has never been something that I talked about...I do have one. One I don't have is the ritualistic way in which I practice my faith. Today, I choose to be an upstanding Christian and try to do right by those around me.

2. Reading - I love to read. While it hasn't always been the forefront of my life, I feel much better when I can pick up a book and hold it in my hand. Now I use a Kindle to read most of the books I am interested in because I ran out of room to shelve them.

3. Watching Movies - I love girl movies and most especially holiday movies - Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween (not the gross ones, more family style). I should probably add all the Harry Potter flicks too. I have a secret though...I like it when a movie blows up stuff. Shhhh! Don't tell anyone...it will ruin my image!

4. Writing - I have developed a passion for writing in the last 4 years. While I have been writing for years, it has only recently come to the forefront of my life in terms of putting it out there for the world to see. I feel really lucky to have the opportunity to share it with the world.

5. Gardening - I've always loved flowers, but now I've added herbs, vegetables and other things that bring me visual pleasure. My garden is always a work in progress.

6. Baking -  I love to bake...cookies, cakes, and anything else I can make. With a new element in my stove, the baking season may come sooner rather than later. I need to practice to get the timing down right. Can't wait to get started!

7. Crafts - I used to love doing all types of crafts. I still do, but am more selective these days and mostly I just crochet. Although I would love to do some counted cross again. Just don't know if I can make the time.

8. Quilting - I loved doing this, but haven't had time for it in years. I really need to get back to my sewing machine...it's feeling neglected!

9. Music - Music is my life. I don't feel quite right unless I have it nearby. Technology has made it easier to have it around all the time. Now instead of a big boombox, I have an MP3 player with an infinite possibilities in terms of songs, artists and genres. Having youtube.com also helps in order to search for a variety of music that I wouldn't always have been interested in.

10. Travel - I love to travel and take vacations. I can't wait until we can go on our next trip...but for now those plans are on home because I need to go home and spend time with my parents. With their failing health, it's time to put aside the bad feelings and be with them for just a little while.

What are some of the things that bring you joy? I'd love to hear about them.

Wishing you moments to find your joy!

Faith, God and The Biggest Prayer Chain Ever

When life throws you curve balls that you know you can't possibly withstand...

When you just can't take one more thing because you know you'll go off the deep end...

When you want to crawl under a rock and just give up...

When there is absolutely nothing more that you can do...

Then it's time.

Time to dig in and grab onto the one thing that will lift you out of the darkness...

FAITH.

Grab it...hold on to it...

Because it is a lifeline from God.

And for good measure...

As much as it hurts right now...

Reach out to everyone you know...

All your Friends, and Friends of Friends...

And ask for something you didn't think possible.

The Biggest Prayer Chain Ever...

Because it works...

I'm living proof.

Thank you dear Friends and Friends of Friends. You saved my Dad.

Wishing you moments to find your faith.
